60-Day Composting Challenge

  • 60 Days

About

Put basically, composting is the mixing of waste such as food scraps, dirt, twigs, and leaves to create a natural and free fertilizer rich in nutrients to shape up a backyard or garden. Most people have backyards or gardens that could use a little flare! It is easy to start, and even simpler to continue. You can shape this into a fun science project. The practice of composting helps reduce and reuse the waste that would usually go into a landfill while benefiting you and the planet as well. Why this challenge? Think about the amount of waste each household generates daily, much of this waste consists of organics that could create compost. You can start simply by dedicating one trash can for organic waste such as food scraps - carrot or potato peels, egg shells and more. When this organic waste ends up in a landfill, it undergoes anaerobic decomposition due to the lack of oxygen and this ultimately leads to generation of methane which is about as 30 times as powerful in trapping heat as carbon dioxide. By creating a new habit and collecting your organic waste you will save water, conserve landfill space and reduce the need for harmful commercial fertilizers - it is a win for all!
